The New Next · Fotoblog

© Tobias Kruse

Podiumsdiskussion Fotografie Macht Politik

Mila Teshaieva · Promising Waters

© Mila Teshaieva

Mila Teshaieva is part of the group exhibiton with her series "Promising Waters" at the Swedish Museum Alma Löv.

With her long-term project "Promising Waters" Mila Teshaieva presents a complex exploration of societal transformation of the three former Soviet republics on the shores of the Caspian Sea: Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, which have emerged from the wreckage of the Soviet Union with immense oil and gas reserves.

The photographs of "Promising Waters" take us on a journey through the new oil region: from the facades of modern capitals to fading fishermen villages. Though focused on the Caspian region the photographs are raising rather global questions, as to the relationship between the state and private identity, the ties between past, present and future, and how to pinpoint the boundary between rise or fall.

Panel discussion · The beautiful image

Global photo platforms have established themselves as a source of images for all types of media. In terms of content, these image archives are something between stock photography and author photography. Quality, aesthetics and price seem coherent - sales have become professionalized and demand is growing.

The Ostkreuz - Verein für Fotografie e.V. joins forces with Rote Salon of Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz to hold a panel discussion about this topic. The event aims to put the – often narrowly led – discussion into a broader context.

Introduction: Tibor Bogun (Art Director and Photo Editor, Berlin)

Moderation: Miriam Zlobinski (Photo Editor, Berlin)

Panelists: Karen Fromm (Professor of the photojournalism class, Hochschule Hannover); Andreas Herzau (photographer, lecturer and photo critic, Hamburg); Michael Pfister (head of the photodepartment of ZEIT Online, Berlin) and Gen Sadakane (Creative Director and Co Founder of EyeEm, Berlin).

Tickets 8,- Euro/ 6,- Euro (discount).

The panel discussion is on Tuesday, April 25th 2017 at 8 pm and will be conducted in German.
