6000 visitors for OSTZEIT at the art museum Dieselkraftwerk, our group exhibition was last year's most successful exhibition in Cottbus.
OSTZEIT tells Stories from a vanished Country. Sibylle Bergemann, Ute and Werner Mahler and Harald Hauswald present their view on life, work and the people in the GDR.
The exhibition's next station will be Krakow.
Julian Roeder's solo exhibition can be seen for another two weeks. It displays his pictures of the trade fairs, the anti-globalization protests and the arms fair in Abu Dhabi. At the closing event, he will be speaking about his work.

An exhibition at Berlin's Guardini gallery shows pictures by Julian Roeder from three different groups of works.
In The Summits Julian Roeder documented last decade's anti-globalization movements and photographed the protests at G8 and EU summits. World of Warfare deals with the latest arms fair in Abu Dhabi, where military equipment of all kinds was presented - just as the Arab Spring was in full bloom. For Human Resources Julian Roeder photographed at various trade fairs and shows how in this artificial commercial world the individuality of people dissolves. "Julian Roeder. RambaZamba is a special theater, the ensemble consists mainly of people with so-called mental retardation. For years, Sibylle Bergemann accompanied the actors in their rehearsals, shyly at first, then with a lot of empathy and a feeling for the special magic of their work.
An exhibition in Berlin now gathers the images of the resulting long-term study, well-known classics like the Woyzeck Series alongside unreleased photos, new prints as well as analog hand proofs and polaroid originals.

Since 50 years now, the "Deutscher Jugendfotopreis" is given for outstanding photographs by young people. In 2002 OSTKREUZ member Julian Roeder received it. He is represented in the exibition "Für immer jung" that displays selected works by the awardees from the last five decades.

The Berlin based gallery Dittrich & Schlechtriem shows the „Mona Lisas of the suburbs“ by Werner and Ute Mahler. We invite you to the opening on friday. In their work „Mona Lisas of the suburbs“ Werner and Ute Mahler deal with the "in between", on a temporal as well as on a spatial level. They show girls in Europe's suburbs, who are in a state of transition: between city and countryside, between being a child and being a woman. After forty years of marriage and individual careers in photography this is their first collaborative project. The book accompanying the exhibition has recently been published by Meier and Mueller with a print run limited to 500 copies. The first love and the ever repeating patterns and rituals of approach are the theme of Annette Hauschilds series "first love", which will now be exhibited for the first time. It shows young people who can be bold and confident, and then again shy and awkward in their attempt to get close to each other.
The exhibition is part of the international conference "First Love. On Second Thought" and will be introduced by art historian Prof. Dr. Annette Geiger.

Ute and Werner Mahler were awarded this year's "Kunstpreis Fotografie" by Lotto Brandenburg for their "Mona Lisas of the suburbs". You meant so much to all of us, as a mentor and as a friend. Arno Fischer (1927 - 2011).
To produce the body of work, the Mahlers spent three years traveling across Europe, meeting their "Mona Lisas" in Liverpool, Minsk, Florence, Reykjavik and Berlin. Going to the suburbs, they waited for girls that had something mysterious and timeless in their faces. They portrayed them in their own surroundings, between buildings and meadows, but with an equipment used mostly in old photo studios: a plate camera, a black cloth, a tripod and a stool with a head rest. The girls took a seat on this stool and hinted at a smile, just like the model in the famous Renaissance painting.
The first "Mona Lisas of the suburbs" were shown as part of the OSTKREUZ exhibition "The City. Becoming and Decaying". The book published by Meier and Mueller contains a new and expanded selection of photographs and a text by architect and author Wolfgang Kil. Its print run is limited to 500 copies. In addition, there will be an edition of 50 copies with an extra print, and a limited edition box of 30 copies.
