From the end of May, the Flatz Museum in Dornbirn, Vorarlberg, will be showing the exhibition "Café Sibylle. Fashion and Everyday Life in the GDR" with photographs by Sibylle Bergemann and Ute Mahler.

On Karl-Marx-Allee, the socialist boulevard, there is still the famous "Café Sibylle", named after the magazine "Sibylle", which was popular in GDR times. The "Café Sibylle" regularly hosted meetings of editors and models as well as fashion shows. Sibylle" was first published in 1956 and was the leading magazine for fashion and culture in the GDR for over three decades. East Germany's best-known female photographers worked for it, and their pictures are now the focus of this exhibition. In addition to the OSTKREUZ founders Ute Mahler and Sybille Bergemann, Gundula Schulze Eldowy and Evelyn Richter are represented with photographs. All works are on loan from the F.C. Gundlach Foundation, Hamburg.

We are very pleased that the Goethe-Institut Jordan and the Image Festival Amman have invited us to the 11th edition of the photo festival at the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts with a group exhibition!

More than 30 years of political and social development in Germany have been continuously captured by the different generations of OSTKREUZ photographers since the agency was founded. OSTKREUZ thus has a comprehensive image archive of significant photographic contemporary documents from a third of a century, ranging from the 1980s to the present. The group exhibition shows twelve photographic positions from Germany on the festival theme "roots". The selected, emblematic series by the founding photographers Sibylle Bergemann, Harald Hauswald, Ute Mahler and Werner Mahler each enter into a dialogue with works by the subsequent OSTKREUZ generations, including Jörg Brüggemann, Sibylle Fendt, Annette Hauschild, Thomas Meyer, Frank Schinski, Jordis Antonia Schlösser, Linn Schröder and Heinrich Voelkel.

Jordis Antonia Schlösser and Heinrich Voelkel will be present at the opening at the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts.

The Hamburg Offspace Gallery Hinterconti is showing Heinrich Holtgreve's photographic work "Wer hat, dem wird gegeben" (Whoever has will be given), created from 2016 to 2020, in a two-day solo exhibition. In this exhibition, the photographer examines the inequalities of European-style developed capitalism. For him, these - which otherwise only take shape in figures and statistics, books by sociologists and speeches by politicians - rarely come to light as strikingly as they do on the heel of Europe, where the British city of Gibraltar and the Spanish border town of La Línea de la Concepción share a border. While Gibraltar is booming as a tourist magnet and tax haven, a third of the people in La Línea are unemployed. While the turnover of the online casinos flows to Gibraltar, the ships of drug smugglers land in the hinterland of La Línea. Here Heinrich Holtgreve has found his way to sometimes romantic, sometimes sober, sometimes ironic and associative images.

Sibylle Fendt is known for her medium-format, analogue works. The Goethe-Institut Toronto, Canada, currently presents her latest artist portraits and offers encounters with Peaches, Pussy Riot, Kis'Keya, Danielle de Picciotto and many others. The photographer portrays personalities she appreciates for their distinctive style and courageous choices - all united by a feminist stance. Her solo exhibition explores the topics of gender justice, diversity and portraiture, offering exceptional views of positions with a clear stance that inspire you to shape your own.

The Goethe-Institut Toronto presents Sibylle Fendt's exhibition "(Almost) Everyone anyone" as the main exhibition of the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival. The Toronto presentation will be followed by an exhibition at the Goethe-Institut Washington D.C. as part of the Focus on the Story Festival from 2 June.

Im Rahmen der Internationalen Photoszene Köln wird Tamara Eckhardts Arbeit „Vom plötzlichen Erwachsenwerden“ im Fotoraum Köln ausgestellt. Für diese begleitete die Fotografin über einen längeren Zeitraum hinweg junge Mütter des Berliner Randbezirks Marzahn-Hellersdorf in ihrem Zuhause. Porträts, Momente des Innehaltens und gefundene Stillleben geben einen Einblick in die Herausforderungen des Mutterseins und Erwachsenwerdens sowie in die liebevolle Beziehung zwischen Mutter und Kind.

Das Stadthaus Ulm präsentiert in einer Einzelausstellung Johanna-Maria Fritz umfassende Fotoserie „Like a Bird. Zirkuskultur in islamischen Ländern“, welche die Fotografin in Afghanistan, Dagestan, dem Gazastreifen, Indien, Indonesien, Iran oder auch im Senegal aufgenommen hat. In diesen muslimisch geprägten Ländern stieß Fritz auf eine Zirkuskultur, die inmitten schwierigster Lebensumstände wichtige Freiräume des Selbstausdrucks schafft sowie einer tief verwurzelten Sehnsucht nach Frieden und Freiheit Ausdruck verleiht.

Mit einfühlsamen Porträts, inszenierter Performance-Fotografie und dokumentarischen Bildern stellt sie Gemeinschaften vor, die in Momenten des gesellschaftlichen Wandels und Situationen der politischen Krise einerseits alte Traditionen bewahren, andererseits aber auch die Hoffnung auf eine bessere Zukunft aufrechterhalten und vermitteln.

Tamara Eckhardts Serie „Youth of the Island Field“ wurde von dem französischen Fotofestival „Les Boutographies“ ausgewählt und wird im Mai in der Hauptausstellung im Pavillon Populaire in Montpellier zu sehen sein. Im Zentrum dieser Arbeit stehen Kinder und Jugendliche aus St. Marys Park, einem Viertel in Limerick, Irland, die Tamara Eckhardt über einen Zeitraum von fast drei Jahren mit ihrer Kamera begleitete. Die mehrfach ausgezeichnete Serie gibt einen intimen Einblick in die Lebenswelt der dort aufwachsenden Kinder.

Anne Schönharting hat über zehn Jahre Menschen in ihren Wohnungen in Berlin-Charlottenburg fotografiert. Die Bilder ihrer Serie „HABITAT“ zeigen Interieurs, Porträts, Stillleben, Inszenierungen der Fotografin und sind zugleich Dokumentation: Gesten, Haltungen, Gegenstände und Ausstattungen der Wohnräume sind Ausdruck des gesellschaftlichen Status und des persönlichen Selbstverständnisses der Porträtierten.

Diese Fotografien gehen aktuell in der Villa Oppenheim einen Dialog mit der historischen Kunstsammlung Charlottenburg und ihren Werken des 19. Jahrhunderts und der Berliner Secession ein. Aus beiden Bildwelten lässt sich das Bedürfnis ablesen, sich in und mit Bildern zu repräsentieren. Noch bis zum Ende der Ausstellung finden mehrere Führungsformate mit Anne Schönharting sowie ein Vortrag mit Prof. Dr. Sibylle Einholz zum Thema „Habitat? Blicke in historische Berliner Fotografenateliers“ in der Villa Oppenheim statt.

Ina Schoenenburg ist mit der Fotoserie „Wie Weimar wohnt“ ab Ende März im öffentlichen Stadtraum in Weimar vertreten. Die Bilder zeigen Weimarer:innen in ihrem Zuhause – in der Künstlervilla, der Plattenbauwohnung oder dem Wohntruck. Die Fotoserie macht Vertrautes sichtbar und bietet einen vielschichtigen Blick auf heutige Lebensformen.

Diese Arbeit ist ein gemeinsames Projekt der Fotografin und Axel Völcker, ARD Kultur und der Klassik Stiftung Weimar und hat den „ARD Kultur Creators“ Wettbewerb 2022 gewonnen. Sie wird außerdem in der dritten Ausgabe des Magazins „klassisch modern“ veröffentlicht. Ein Dokumentarfilm des MDR erzählt von der Umsetzung des Fotoprojekts und ist ab Frühjahr in der ARD Mediathek und auf ardkultur.de verfügbar.

Noch bis zum Ende des Monats März ist im Amtssalon in Charlottenburg die Jubiläumsausstellung des EMOP mit dem Titel „Touch. Politiken der Berührung“ zu sehen, in der unsere Gründer-Fotograf:innen Sibylle Bergemann und Ute Mahler jeweils mit eindrucksvollen Schwarzweiß-Serien vertreten sind. Sibylle Bergemanns Mode-Aufnahmen zeigen die avantgardistischen Entwürfe der Ostberliner Mode-, Theater- und Performancegruppe „Allerleirauh“ (Kostüme Katharina Reinwald und Angelika Kroker).

Ute Mahlers Serie „Die Ratten 07“ ist ein freies Langzeitprojekt der Fotografin, für das sie von 1992 bis 1996 Obdachlose durch die Stadt Berlin und auf Reisen begleitete. Diese waren Teil der gleichnamigen Theatergruppe.

Die ARTCO Gallery Berlin zeigt noch bis Anfang April die Einzelausstellung „Jenseits der Grenzen“ von Johanna-Maria Fritz. Seit fast zehn Jahren bereist sie als Fotografin die Welt und findet ihre Motive in Krisen, Konflikten, zerfallenden Staaten, bei verfolgten Minderheiten, an den Rändern der Gesellschaft. Die Ausstellung besteht aus verschiedenen Serien, insbesondere stellt sie seit dem Kriegsausbruch in der Ukraine im letzten Jahr entstandene, verstörende Aufnahmen in den Mittelpunkt: Bilder aus Kyjiw während der Belagerung, aus Butscha unmittelbar nach der Befreiung und aus Bachmut während der Schlacht um die Stadt.

Ende März wird es in einem Gespräch zwischen Johanna-Maria Fritz mit der Bildredakteurin Barbara Stauss um die Frage „Wie funktioniert Kriegsfotografie?“ gehen, außerdem wird die Fotografin ihre in der Galerie erhältlichen Bücher signieren.

Seit Oktober 2022 haben Sebastian Wells und die Redakteur:innen Ivanna Kozachenko, Andrii Ushytskyi und Vsevolod Kazarin, die Art Direktion um Anne-Lene Proff und Peter Bünnagel (Kollektiv Scrollan) sowie der Verlag SHIFT BOOKS aus Berlin an einer zweiten Ausgabe des Solomiya-Magazins gearbeitet. Die 132 Seiten starke Ausgabe enthält Arbeiten talentierter, bereits bekannter ukrainischer Künstler:innen aus den Bereichen Fotografie und Grafik. Außerdem Texte über Fotografie, Film, zeitgenössische Kunst, Literatur und insbesondere den Alltag junger Menschen in der Ukraine, die versuchen, die vielschichtige Lebensrealität im ständigen Visier der russischen Aggressoren begreifbar zu machen. "This magazine is a testament to resistance through the means of art”, erklären die Redakteur:innen.

Am 24. März wird das neue Heft in Berlin und am 28. März in Kyjiw vorgestellt. Das Magazin kann über den OSTKREUZ-Shop bestellt werden.

In the current print issue of The New Yorker, author Joshua Yaffa and photographer Emile Ducke report from the eastern Ukrainian town of Isyum after its liberation from several months of Russian occupation.

In the small town, where everyone knows everyone, the inhabitants are now faced with the delicate and complicated question of how to deal with wartime collaboration: Who did what and why during the occupation, and what will happen to the collaborators?

Sibylle Fendt is participating with her work "Gärtners Reise" in the group exhibition "'Alle Wege sind offen'. Fotografinnen auf Reise" (All paths are open. Female photographers on the road.) at the Kulturforum Hermann Stenner in Bielefeld. The exhibition presents positions of international female photographers with their respective specific approaches to the supposedly longing topic of "travel".  

This exhibition is intended to open our eyes to a female view of the world and its far reaches, from the Weimar period to the present day, loosely based on the quote "Alle Wege sind offen" by Annemarie Schwarzenbach, who is also represented with works in the exhibition. Other artists are Gisela Wölbing, Gertrud van Dyck, Ruth Orkin, Elia Alba, Victoria Sambunaris, Katharina Bosse, Justine Kurland, Amy Stein, Anja Conrad, Kelli Connell, Andrea Diefenbach and Emine Akbaba.

Sebastian Wells and the Ukrainian photographer Vsevolod Kazarin have realised portraits together in Kyiv, which are now part of the finalist exhibition of the "Portraits Hellerau Photography Award" in the Technische Sammlung Dresden. The festive award ceremony will take place during the opening.

The focus of the EMOP's anniversary exhibition entitled "Touch. Politiken der Berührung" focuses on the polyphonic juxtaposition of Berlin's photographic scenes. The group exhibition will be shown in the Amtsalon on Kantstrasse; on four floors, works by 40 Berlin artists who have decisively shaped the city's photographic image culture for many decades will be brought into relation with each other. Sibylle Bergemann and Ute Mahler are both part of this exhibition. The latter is represented in the exhibition with her series "The Rats 07" from the early nineties, for which she accompanied a theatre project which involves homeless people and to which the Volksbühne opened its rooms in the Wende years.

In addition, Ute Mahler is an invited talk guest at the Podiumsdiskussion „Fotografie Jetzt. Ein Medium im Wandel bewahren und entwickeln“ (Photography Now. Preserving and Developing a Medium in Transition). Other guests include Claudia Roth, Member of the German Bundestag, Minister of State for Culture and Media; Florian Ebner, Head of the photographic collection Centre Pompidou, Paris and Adrian Sauer, artist. fotoszene nürnberg e.V. presents Jordis Antonia Schlösser's series "Vor dem Verschwinden - Von Garzweiler bis Lützerath" at the Atelier- und Galeriehaus Defet in Nuremberg. Over a period of two decades, Schlösser's photographs show the destruction of villages and the fate of people in the Garzweiler region in the Rhenish open-cast lignite mining area - up to the recent eviction of Lützerath.

As part of the EMOP, Galerie Buchkunst Berlin is juxtaposing the artistic positions of Harald Hauswald and the Czech Jindřich Štreit with the exhibition "Dissidentenball - Photography Under Surveillance". Both photographers were monitored, arrested and their photographs and negatives confiscated because of their portrayal of everyday life in their country's respective communist dictatorship. Under this permanent pressure, they developed sublime visual languages that show the contradictions between everyday living conditions and state propaganda and today provide an unadulterated view of this period.

Johanna-Maria Fritz's work is currently being presented in three solo exhibitions, two of which are in Germany (Berlin and Aachen) and one in Belgium. There, The Verduyn Gallery in Moregem is showing her long-term work "Like a Bird" about circus in Muslim countries.

The ARTCO Gallery presents Fritz's series "A Grave in the Garden" in Aachen as well as the solo exhibition "Jenseits der Grenzen" in Berlin as part of the EMOP. Johanna-Maria Fritz was one of the first foreign photojournalists in Ukraine in the spring of 2022 and took photographs in Butscha, Kharkiv and the Donbas, among other places.

Parallel to the European Month of Photography (EMOP), the Gallerie Poll in Berlin-Mitte is showing the solo exhibition "Aiming High" by Frank Schinski. From 2017 to 2020, Schinski photographed job fairs, job interviews, castings and assessment centres in various European countries. In the process, he observed all those involved, who are caught up in a seemingly firmly defined choreography of imaginary expectations. He focuses on the interactions between the individual and the world of work, which determine large areas of personal life. The exhibition provides an insight into the project, which will soon be published in its entirety as a book.
