10/25/2011 Annette Hauschild · Exhibition in Potsdam

The first love and the ever repeating patterns and rituals of approach are the theme of Annette Hauschilds series "first love", which will now be exhibited for the first time. It shows young people who can be bold and confident, and then again shy and awkward in their attempt to get close to each other.
The exhibition is part of the international conference "First Love. On Second Thought" and will be introduced by art historian Prof. Dr. Annette Geiger.
A limited edition with four prints from the series is now available on OSTKREUZ-Store.

FOTODOKS 2011 is opening its doors for the fourth time. This year's edition of the festival deals with the tension between credibility and sensationalism in documentary photography. Two OSTKREUZ members are among the 16 photographers that have been selected for the festival exhibition "UNGLAUBLICH – INCREDIBILE". Youth consecration on the countryside, punks and May parades in East Berlin, dance and nostalgia in Clärchens Ballhaus: The exhibition "OSTZEIT" evokes a country that no longer exists, even if its traces still surround many of us day per day.
50 years after the construction of the Wall, the OSTKREUZ group exhibition is shown in Cottbus. Our photographers Ute Mahler, Werner Mahler and Harald Hauswald will hold an artist talk on 20 October.

09/15/2011 Werner and Ute Mahler - award ceremony and exhibition

Ute and Werner Mahler were awarded this year's "Kunstpreis Fotografie" by Lotto Brandenburg for their "Mona Lisas of the suburbs". The award ceremony will be held on 15 September 2011 at Haus der Brandenburgisch-Preußischen Geschichte in Potsdam. Starting on 16 September, the work will be shown at Potsdam's Kunsthaus sans titre.

09/07/2011 Ute and Werner Mahler - „Mona Lisas“ now a book!

Between city and countryside, between being a child and being a woman: for their project "Mona Lisas of the suburbs" Ute and Werner Mahler photographed girls in transition. They have selected thirty of these portraits for a book that can now be ordered in our OSTKREUZ-Store. © Ute and Werner Mahler/OSTKREUZ

To produce the body of work, the Mahlers spent three years traveling across Europe, meeting their "Mona Lisas" in Liverpool, Minsk, Florence, Reykjavik and Berlin. Going to the suburbs, they waited for girls that had something mysterious and timeless in their faces. They portrayed them in their own surroundings, between buildings and meadows, but with an equipment used mostly in old photo studios: a plate camera, a black cloth, a tripod and a stool with a head rest. The girls took a seat on this stool and hinted at a smile, just like the model in the famous Renaissance painting.

The first "Mona Lisas of the suburbs" were shown as part of the OSTKREUZ exhibition "The City. Becoming and Decaying". The book published by Meier and Mueller contains a new and expanded selection of photographs and a text by architect and author Wolfgang Kil. Its print run is limited to 500 copies. In addition, there will be an edition of 50 copies with an extra print, and a limited edition box of 30 copies.

For over 40 years Sibylle Bergemann took Polaroids. She was fascinated by the immediacy of the medium and the peculiar color of the images. An exhibition at C/O Berlin now presents 140 Polaroids throughout the whole of her artistic career. At the opening, the long version of Sabine Michel's film on Sibylle Bergemann will premier.
In addition, the book "Polaroids" by Sibylle Bergemann is published by Hatje Cantz Verlag.

06/08/2011 „The city“ until 19 June in Altenburg

Our group exhibition "The City. Becoming and Decaying" will stay at the Lindenau-Museum Altenburg only until 19 June 2011. It is the last chance to visit the exhibition in Germany before it will be displayed worldwide by the Goethe-Institute. On 18 June, in the course of the the Museum night Altenburg, several guided tours through the exhibition will be organised, among others by OSTKREUZ photographer Maurice Weiss.

Last month, Annette Hauschild, Dawin Meckel and Espen Eichhöfer went to Altenburg to hold a photo seminar with students on the theme of the exhibition, the becoming and decaying of cities.

Two OSTKREUZ photographers were able to win over the jury of the European Architectural Photography Prize 2011. Dawin Meckel receives one of the two second prizes for his series 'DownTown'. Julian Roeder is awarded for his work 'Lagos transformation'.
The series of both photographers are displayed in the exhibition "Dazwischen | in between". After Frankfurt, it will be on show in Kassel, Isny and Stuttgart.
